Lonrho Affair

Lonrho Affair
The Lonhro Affair in 1973 was described by Edward Heath as ‘the unpleasant and unacceptable face of capitalism’. Lonhro was an international mining and trading company accused of offering large financial ‘incentives’ to business contacts, including Duncan Sandys, an ex-Tory MP. Sandys was paid a tax-free sum in excess of £100,000 for leaving his consultancy job, a practice which was not in itself illegal, but which exposed a gaping hole in legislation. Subsequent scandals such as the ‘cash for questions’ inquiry into the ‘purchase’ of questions in the House of Commons in 1996, allegedly involving another prominent Tory MP, Neil Hamilton, have occurred sporadically.
